Moody Photos by Stefan Karpa

Stefan Karpa - Photographer

Photography defines me, and this wonderful city of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, has in no small way shaped the kind of photographs I take. It is ancient, beautiful and romantic, yet at the same time dark and menacing. My work is not limited to the streets of my home town but I suppose I carry the seed it has planted wherever I take my cameras.

But who the hell am I and why do I see this way?

Maybe it was a knock on the head as a baby that did it, maybe it is the fact that I am almost blind. I'm not sure but something makes me see this way and photography is my way to express it and show others what I see.

A spell in Glasgow studying photography gave me the technical skills I needed, the building blocks to great images. I started in the music business, taking photographs of the famous and the soon to be famous, sweating, jostling and getting progressivly more deaf as the gigs rolled on. Do I regret it? Not a bit. But I found my passion, my heart, my soul - in the world outside the streets, the hills, and the skies...

Some have called my images gothic or moody, I don't know its just what's there. I used to use a darkroom but now my darkroom is Photoshop, in it's bowels I craft my sight. But enough of my mutterings, go and look at the photos and make up your own mind. Enjoy.

My photographic thoughts…

This site is not just galleries of my photographic work - although that is probably why most people are here. Edinburgh is my home town, and its coast inspires me to shoot lots n’ lots of photographs of the big skies that I love. My time in Italy was inspirational, the months in Tuscany in and around the ancient town of Lucca left me with a mountain of photographs and memories. I even have photos of my visits to Berlin where I first came across the monumental Soviet architecture of Treptow park.

But.

There are also words here, in time there will be tutorials, my thoughts on where all this photography malarkey is going, and even rants about my adventures - like forgetting to charge my batteries before going off on a London jaunt (thank god for camera phones!). So keep your eyes peeled and come back again!
